In a massive act of violence, more than 30 people have been murdered in the Philippines, at least 12 of them journalists. Mostly unidentified armed men, including two policemen, appear to be responsible, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Some of them have been linked to the province’s governor, a supporter of Philippine President Gloria Arroyo The victims were massacred on the southern island of Mindanao, and some of the victims were beheaded, said RSF.
Clothilde Le Coz, the Washington, D.C. director of RSF said the organization has a correspondent there who they are in communication with.
“It’s one of the biggest massacres of journalists we’ve ever seen,” said Ms. Le Coz. “We convey our condolences and sympathy to all journalists in the Philippines, who are in state of shock after this appalling massacre.”

BERKELEY, Calif.—Amidst rally cries, a crowd of several hundred students, faculty, workers, and union representatives gathered outside UC Berkeley’s Wheeler Hall on Friday—beyond police lines. In protest of the University of California (UC) Regents’ recent decision to raise tuition by 32 percent for the Spring 2010 semester, 40 students had occupied the building. According to school officials, 3,800 students were unable to attend class in Wheeler Hall. As part of the three-day walkout and strike that began on Nov. 18, students and union workers formed picket lines blocking entrance to the university. Fire alarms were set off continually in buildings all over campus to fuel the protest and rally support. The alarms at the main university library were set off so frequently that it was closed down.

NEW YORK—Israel’s press freedom is in free fall and journalists are being murdered in Russia and Mexico, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF). RSF released its World Press Freedom Index Tuesday and there was a general downward trend in the 175 countries surveyed.
European countries took the top 13 spots, yet there is a troubling decline overall, according to Clothilde Le Coz, Reporters Without Borders’ Washington director.
“Not only because of the physical assaults journalist are victim of, but because these countries are adapting and passing laws that are dangerous for freedom of the press and freedom of expression,” she said at the Overseas Press Club in New York. Five media organizations covered the event.
“The Internet is really a big issue in those [European] countries—the laws they are adopting in terms of Internet freedom are restrictive for freedom of speech in general.”

According to confirmed reports from Newsweek, their own reporter and filmmaker, Maziar Bahari, has been released from Iran. Mr. Bahari, who was detained in Iran since the June elections, was released from Evin Prison on bail on Oct. 17.

The 42 year-old reporter is expecting his first child later this month, and his mother is in poor health. Newsweek speculated he was released on “humanitarian” reasons.
In a statement on Bahari’s release, the magazine said:
“We are relieved that NEWSWEEK journalist Maziar Bahari is home with his family today. We would like to thank all of those who supported Maziar through this long and uncertain period.”

PEN American Center will host what promises to be an engaging, eye-opening, and interesting event (regardless of one’s political ideology) about the U.S.’s so-called war on terror.
Reckoning with Torture: Memos and Testimonies from the “War on Terror” will include Matthew Alexander, Jonathan Ames, K. Anthony Appiah, Paul Auster, Ishmael Beah, Don DeLillo, Eve Ensler, Jenny Holzer, A.M. Homes, Jameel Jaffer, Susanna Moore, Jack Rice, Amrit Singh, and Art Spiegelman. Guests are writers, artists, lawyers, a former U.S. interrogator, and others.
Co-hosted by the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union), the event will look at acts of abuse and torture during the war on terror. Event participants will read from the recently-released secret documents that have brought these abuses to light—memos, declassified communications, and testimonies by detainees—and respond with thoughts about how the U.S. can move forward.

NEW YORK—As residents in New York gear up for the local elections, an unseen force may be hard at work.
City Comptroller candidate John Liu has a friendly relationship with Chinese Communist Party (CCP) organizations and former Canadian diplomat Brian McAdam says New Yorkers should be concerned.
“Wherever there is a Chinese community, the CCP is going to try and infiltrate, if they haven’t done so already,” McAdam said.
City Councilman John Liu is vying for the New York City comptroller job, with the primary elections on Sept. 15.
He will face David Weprin, Melinda Katz, and David Yassky in a bid to be the Democratic candidate for the main race for comptroller—the caretaker of the city’s more than $60 million budget.
‘Face’ of the United Front
Politicians like John Liu are “the face” of the CCP’s United Front work in their cities, according to a member of the NYPD with a history of work in Chinese communities. He spoke about the issue on a separate occasion under condition of anonymity.
The United Front is a strategy that uses overseas Chinese to infiltrate foreign politics and establish community associations, business groups, and media that promote the interests of the CCP around the world. These groups plant or transform political and community leaders who act as agents of influence for the regime.

NEW YORK—If birds of a feather flock together, it’s worth asking who John Liu, Democratic candidate for New York City comptroller, is flocking with.
John Liu’s former chief of staff, John Choe, is an active, outspoken supporter of the North Korean communist regime.
Ellen Young, John Liu’s district administrator until 2006, is widely accused by residents in her district of swindling people out of tens thousands of dollars. Young is a former State Assembly Member.
Liu also has strong ties to the Fukien American Association, known to be connected to the criminal underworld and the Chinese Communist Party.
John Choe on ‘U.S. Imperialism’
“Korea is at the front lines of the liberation struggles against imperialism,” John Choe said in a May 2006 speech. He was speaking at a conference called “Preparing for the Rebirth of the Global Struggle for Socialism” hosted by the Workers World Party, a self-described “orthodox Marxist” political group. The audio of his speech is available at workers.org.
John Choe, as John Liu’s chief of staff for several years, was an influential member of Liu’s City Council administration.
“We still have friends, activists who are being arrested on a daily basis [in South Korea],” Choe said in his 2006 speech to the Workers World Party (MP3 sound file available), “for expressing their free will and their thought and for struggling against the U.S. and U.S. imperialism.”
